HIGH SUGAR CONSUMPTION MAY INCREASE YOUR RISK OF HEART DISEASE

A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine shows that added sugar represents at least 10% of the calories consumed by an average American in one day. But about every 1 out of 10 person’s  has a quarter and more calories added to sugar.

On average, women need just under 2,200 kilocalories, and men about 2,400 kilocalories per day.

Researcher disclosed that a high-sugar diet can increase your chances of dying from heart disease, even if you are not overweight.

A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine shows that added sugar represents at least 10% of the calories consumed by an average American in one day. But about every 1 out of 10 person’s  has a quarter and more calories added to sugar.

Over the 15-years research on added sugar and heart disease, those who consumed 25% or more of their daily calories as sugar were more than twice as likely to die from heart disease than those with heart disease in comparison to those whose diets included less than 10% added sugar. Normally, the chances of dying from heart disease increased with the amount of sugar in the diet. This became true regardless of someone’s age, gender, physical activity and body mass index, the measure of weight.

What Nutritionists Say

Peterson Kikomeko Kato ass. Professor of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Kyambogo, Kampala disapproves of the consumption of sugar in large quantities for two reasons. Sugar, An Energy Source

Kikomeko says that sugar is not necessarily bad. The health risks are caused by the consumption of sugar in large quantities compared to what the body needs, the overall health of the body and the physical activity of the individual.

The sugar breaks down into small units that the body uses for energy.

“Sugar glucose is an energy source that will cause poor metabolism to energize the body,” he explains, adding that if the person breaks down due to low blood sugar, the remedy is glucose to increase your energy levels.

Recommended Daily Intake

According to Kikomeko, daily consumption of sugar should correspond to the gender, state of health and activity level of an individual. On average, women need just under 2,200 kilocalories, and men about 2,400 kilocalories per day. However, he quickly says that people who exercise or expectant mothers need more energy. One gram of sugar provides 4kilocalories.

Alternatives

Kikomeko recommends that you go slowly into sugary drinks, eg. Soft drinks, processed and packaged juices.

Instead, he says our diet should consist of more unrefined sugar. These have sugar in their raw state; natural state that the body slowly breaks down to receive nutrients for various functions.

Explain that fruits, such as mangoes and pineapples, contain fructose natural sugar and sugarcane sucrose.

Honey

Atim says that although honey has natural sugar, it should be consumed in moderation.

Use Natural Sweeteners

When making your juice, Atim recommends using sweet fruits as sweeteners, such as pineapple and mangoes.
